I just started going to our community pool here for the past 2 weeks. ANd was unaware of the dangers that lerk outside the pools, I was jsut always worried about the drains. So my 2yo was walking funny for a few days and said his foot hurt but my DH and I didn't see anything so we decided to just keep an eye on him. Well, low and behold what popped up last night?  A planter wart on his heel. After doing all my research the most common place to catch this is a public pool. Children should wear swimming shoes at all times at public pools. The treatments can be quite painful and take up to 3 months, so I am informing you all so that your child will not suffer from this. I wish I had known this as my little ones always want to walk around and jump off the sides of the pool, never stay in. Well, I am waiting on my pedi to call me back with the method of treatment that we will use, and some are painful so I am dreading the outcome. Please spread the word on the swimming shoes as I see there are actually playdates planned at public parks and pools.

This is a great tip razin!  Both pools and the beach!!

Jonah didn't wear beach shoes at the beach.  Jonah said a crab got him. But his foot swelled up and had a black spot.  I couldn't pull it out so we went to the doctor.  He yelled and screamed (he's about to be 11). Finally they used an anesthetic (Jonah wouldn't let them because he hates needles). She said the problem was what was in his foot was stringy.  So it was very difficult to get it all out.  Now everyone is sure to wear water shoes everywhere everytime!

I used to have planter warts on my hands ( They magically went away when I was pregnant, and havent come back! ) Anyway, I saw a treatment for them on the doctors after mine has gone away, put nailpolish on it, and put a bandaid on it for a few days. It seems crazy, but I heared it works really well, and almost works everytime! Its worth a try, before doing the painful methods :)

Ok I couldnt wait I had to google.... Gross! That really stink!

HPV at the pool?

A plantar wart (also known as "Verruca plantaris"[1]:405) is a wart caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) occurring on the sole or toes of the foot. (HPV infections in other locations are not plantar; see human papillomavirus.) Plantar warts are usually self-limiting, but should be treated to lessen symptoms (which may include pain), decrease duration, and reduce transmission. [2]

Because plantar warts are spread by contact with moist walking surfaces, they can be prevented by not walking barefoot in public areas such as showers or communal changing rooms, not sharing shoes and socks, and avoiding direct contact with warts on other parts of the body or on other people. Humans build immunity with age, so infection is less common among adults than children.[4]

Once a person is infected, there is no evidence that any treatment eliminates HPV infection or decreases infectivity, and warts may recur after treatment because of activation of latent virus present in healthy skin adjacent to the lesion. There is currently no vaccine for these types of the virus. However, treatments are sometimes effective at addressing symptoms and causing remission (inactivity) of the virus.[3]

The treatment that will be effective in a particular case is highly variable. The most comprehensive medical review found that no treatment method was more than 73% effective and using a placebo had a 27% average success rate.[5]

Some treatments that have been found to be effective include:[6]

First-line therapy over the counter salicylic acid
Second-line therapy Cryosurgery, intralesional immunotherapy, or pulsed dye laser therapy
Third-line therapy Bleomycin, surgical excision

Podiatrists and dermatologists are considered specialists in the treatment of plantar warts, though most warts are treated by primary care physicians.

As warts are contagious, precautions should be taken to avoid spreading.

You can buy inexpensive water shoes at Wal-Mart.  When I used to take Luca to the water parks he wore them all the time.

These things have always existed  but not as widely known before the internet.  Like Liz, I grew up in Florida.  I never wear shoes unless I HAVE to.  I don't even have them on when I drive most of the time unless I'm running into a store.  Even after walking to the beach, getting huge blisters on the bottom of my feet from the oven-like pavement when I was younger, I still don't wear shoes.

I know how Lexi felt.  I had a man-of-war wrap it's tentacles around my arm when I was her age.  My friend thought I'd been attacked by a shark and started to swim away.  When she saw there was no blood she swam back and started pushing me out of the water.  Thankfully her mom was a nurse and her dad was an oceanographer so whatever they put on it helped.

The only place I'm anal about where my kids wear shoes is public bathrooms, especially at the beach.  Carey and Maggie were playing with a crab on beach day.  I wonder if that's the one that got Jonah.  I have pictures of it, too!
